"I see the landscape as a giant theatre, and the clouds above are a major character in the play."
- Gregory Hardy, 2023
Peter Robertson Gallery is pleased to announce The Clouds Above, an exhibition of new
paintings by Gregory Hardy. Greg Hardy is arguably Canada’s leading artist whose practice focusses on Western Canadian landscape painting. Hardy’s work has two distinct sources of inspiration, his acreage located 50km east of Saskatoon, an area of rolling farmland and wetlands. The second being Lac La Ronge in Northern Saskatchewan 380 km north of Saskatoon at the start of the Canadian Shield. This rugged landscape, with the lake populated with over 1,300 islands and surrounded by boreal forest has been a major inspiration for Hardy’s for more than a decade.
Hardy draws outdoors, often in his kayak, observing subtle changes in weather, immanent or
fading storms and how these affect the landscape around him. These sketches are the basis
for the paintings produced in his studio, allowing him to interpret a specific moment using colour
to depict light. Expressive, beautiful cloud formations have been a trademark of Hardy’s work for
several years, combined with his use of unlikely colour these paintings draw the viewer
powerfully into his world.
