David Janzen: Crestline

October 17 - November 02, 2019

Peter Robertson Gallery is pleased to present ‘Crestline’, a survey of David Janzen’s diverse painting practice over the last 15 years. Janzen has found inspiration in a wide range of subjects; caves, dams, transfer stations, rockets, aircraft and surveillance cameras have all inspired him. David Janzen graduated in 1983 from ACAD with a Major in Painting and a Minor in Drawing.  He works as an artist/facilitator at the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts.

Chris Flodberg: Carry on as Usual | David Janzen: PileDriver

April 21 - May 08, 2012

Chris Flodberg’s highly rendered canvases present the excess and indulgence of extravagant banquet tables and exquisite party masks alongside the more menacing imagery of fighter jets, attack dogs and even an inescapable mass of jellyfish. Through juxtaposition, these fantastic worlds become metaphors reflecting deeper political and personal narratives.

Over the course of a month in the summer of 2010, David Janzen mapped a scenic course through the province, tracing the locations of 17 waste management facilities. He photo-documented these landfills set against the backdrop of some of Alberta’s most scenic vistas, including Drumheller, Jasper, and Banff. Janzen’s upcoming exhibition, PileDriver, features a body of work based on this experience and created during his 2011 residency at Harcourt House Artist Run Centre. Often set against a vapour-filled atmosphere, these paintings teeter between realistic documentation and science fiction, sometimes serene, often foreboding.
